Freedom Oklahoma Statement on Representative Turner’s announcement
As 2024 state candidate filing begins, today Representative Mauree Turner (they/them) announced they will not seek another term in office due to their health. Being able to step back and take space for ourselves, to care for our bodies, to be cared for, is an act rooted in love. To do so as a Black, trans person is radical. Representative Turner is telling all of us that we don’t have to work ourselves to death to still be a part of this movement. They’ve constantly reminded us that leadership does not require a title, and that a title should not change the way we show up in, with, and for community. Their presence will be missed, and all members of the legislature have a void to fill when it comes to showing up with and for transgender folks–a role that too often Representative Turner has filled alone in their time in office.
With Representative Turner not seeking reelection, and Senate Minority Leader Kay Floyd terming out of legislative service, we are poised to see openly 2SLGBTQ+ representation in the Oklahoma Legislature at a modern-day low, at a time when 2SLGBTQ+ Oklahomans are disproportionately under attack. We’re worried about what that means. And we want to name that no single person can hold that space on their own. This work, making space for us, fighting for our representation and our safety, is a collective effort.
We’re so grateful to Representative Turner for the trust they put in us when they put their name on a ballot. We’re grateful to the way they’ve continued to organize. And we wish them and their family some well deserved rest, peace, and joy, as Representative Turner takes the steps they need to ensure their wellbeing. It’s the least they deserve.
In solidarity,
Freedom Oklahoma
