Mental health resources

As you are navigating Liberate, we know some things may be difficult to process. We have put together a list of free, 2SLGBTQ+ friendly mental health resources you can use in a crisis or for immediate support. If you are looking for local, general sexual health education resources and/or services in your area, we encourage you to check out Community Resources.

If you need to access 2SLGBTQ+ affirming mental health support immediately, contact: 

  • Trans Lifeline https://translifeline.org/ or https://translifeline.org/resources/ 

    • For help, call (877-565-8860) 

    • Check out their resources page for additional assistance if you cannot get through right away on the hotline

  • The Trevor Project https://www.thetrevorproject.org/ 

    • Call 1-866-488-7386 or text START to 678-678

    • You can call, text, or use live chat on their website. All are anonymous. You will be connected with a counselor to chat through what is happening. 

    • If you have to wait for a counselor, they suggest this website for breathing exercises: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/breathing-exercise/

    • If you are on a computer, you can press ESC 3 times at any point to quickly exit from their webpage

  • The LGBT Hotline https://www.lgbthotline.org/ 

    • For adults, call (888-843-4564) 

      • Hours: Mon- Fri 3-11 pm, Saturday from 11 to 4 pm

    • For youth, call (800-246-7743)

      • Hours: Mon- Fri 3-11 pm, Saturday from 11 to 4 pm

    • For seniors, call (888-234-7243)

      • Hours: Mon- Fri 3-11 pm, Saturday from 11 to 4 pm

    • If you can’t get through, you can also email them at help@LGBThotline.org 

    • All calls are anonymous and confidential. Operators are part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and have been trained to respond. Law enforcement will not be involved. Their website has a quick escape option as well as youth chats and online peer support chats.

Here are some additional immediate mental health resources that have not been specifically vetted as 2SLGBTQ+ friendly, but may be helpful in a crisis:

  • 988 Lifeline (call, text, or online chat)

    • Text or Call 988, or you can also call (1-800-273-8255)

    • There is a chat feature on their website, as well

    • Here is a PDF of expectations of How Our Calls Are Routed 

    • 988 calls are routed to a local crisis center, and expectations/needs may change regarding the information you must provide after being directed from the national hotline to a local organization.

  • Strong Hearts Helpline https://strongheartshelpline.org/

    • Call 1-844-7NATIVE (762-8483) or click the chat box on their website

    • Calls and chats are anonymous and confidential

    • This is a domestic and sexual violence helpline for Native Americans and Alaska Natives, offering culturally-appropriate support and advocacy. There is an escape button quick exit from the website and is available 24/7.
